MAKING THE WORLD BRIGHTER, ONE BULB AT A TIME

Tutorial - Roof Base for Wire Frame Item

Okay, so you have a few reindeer or some other wire frame item that you want to put up on the roof. However, you are worried about drilling any holes or that without the holes it will fall over.  This tutorial will show you how to make a simple base for the roof top so you can put your wire frames up there and free up the yard for something else.

STEP 1 - You will need a piece of 1" x 6" board, a 2" x 4" and some stainless steel COARSE THREAD screws about 2.5" to 3" long. You can use deck screws but the stainless steel ones are stronger and will last longer. The length of your  1x6 and 2x4 will depend on what you are going to put up there. Mine are 6' long because they hold a reindeer and a musical instrument frame.

Start with your 1" x 6" board. I used PT fence board from Lowes.

Place the 2x4 on its narrow side and then set the 1x6 on top of it.

Screw the 1x6 to the 2x4 using your stainless steel screws about every 8" o/c.

STEP 3 - Once the 1 x 6 is secured to the 2 x 4 you will want to figure the slope of your roof. You will want the side braces to be a slightly greater angle than the roof slope. These are made from 2 x 4's also. This is so they don't simply rest on the roof, they "dig in" a little.
